Strengthening the Patient Voice in Global axSpA Research

ASAS logo

The Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) Annual Meeting once again brought together the world’s leading clinical researchers, committed to advancing the understanding and management of axSpA. ASIF works closely with ASAS on a number of important projects and we were proud to be represented at the meeting by Jo Davies, Jo Lowe, and Andri Phoka, ASIF Trustee.

Key Scientific Update: Revised ASAS MRI Definitions

One of the major updates announced at the meeting was the revision of the ASAS‑endorsed MRI definitions for sacroiliac joint and spinal involvement in axSpA. These updated definitions reflect the latest evidence and expert consensus on imaging inflammation and structural changes, offering clearer guidance for clinicians evaluating suspected axSpA.

For many patients, MRI plays a critical role in the diagnostic journey—especially for those who do not yet show changes on X‑ray. Improved definitions help reduce uncertainty, support earlier and more accurate identification of disease, and ensure consistent interpretation across clinical centres and research studies worldwide.

ASIF’s Ongoing Involvement in ASAS Research

ASAS leads some of the world’s most influential research in axSpA, and ASIF continues to provide patient representation on numerous ASAS-led projects. Whilst many of these projects are still in progress and information remains confidential, the meeting included several important endorsements and updates.

  • PRAXIS – ASAS endorsed a new minimum set of domains and instruments for the assessment of axSpA in daily practice.
  • SPARADISE – Research to identify the most appropriate instrument(s) for assessing peripheral disease activity in axSpA patients in clinical trials.
  • D2M – ASAS endorsed new ‘Points to Consider’ for clinicians in the management of difficult‑to‑manage or treatment‑refractory axSpA.
  • MRI Definitions Update – New ASAS-endorsed definitions for MRI involvement of the sacroiliac joints and spine.
  • AXIS Project – ASAS endorsed a new consensus definition for axial involvement in psoriatic arthritis (axial PsA).

ASAS Slide Library Update

ASAS also announced enhancements to their Slide Library, an important educational tool for clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates. The latest version now includes slides from the IMAS study, helping to bring global patient perspectives to more clinicians.

Congratulations to Uta Kiltz

ASIF extends warm congratulations to Uta Kiltz, who has been elected as a member of the ASAS Executive Committee. Her dedication to improving axSpA care has long been recognised across the international community. For many years Uta served as a medical advisor to ASIF and her contribution is greatly valued.

A Shared Mission: Improving Lives Worldwide

ASIF’s participation in the ASAS Annual Meeting reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that patients’ realities shape scientific progress. We are proud to represent our members at these meetings and are grateful for the opportunities to contribute to discussions, support key initiatives, and build collaborations that directly benefit people with axSpA around the world.

We thank ASAS for their partnership and look forward to another year of progress, innovation, and stronger patient voices driving meaningful change.
